UVic ocean observatory initiative solidifies funding stream
Austin Westphal, News Staff
The University of Victoria’s Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) initiative will receive a federal investment of $114.8 million over the next six years to advance ocean observing and expand the reach of its open access big data.
Announced Friday (Aug. 19), the funding will be awarded through the Major Science Initiatives Fund of the Canada Foundation for Innovation, a fund that covers portions of operating and maintenance costs of select national science facilities across the country.
Canada has the longest coastline of any country in the world and ONC is the only national ocean observatory – it operates more than 9,000 coastal and deep sea sensors in the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic oceans.
The support will aid the observatory’s endeavour to develop climate crisis solutions, in addition to promoting safer coastal communities, Indigenous ocean data stewardship and a sustainable economy.
“This funding recognizes Ocean Networks Canada for its leadership and the profound difference it’s making on all three Canadian coasts and internationally,” said UVic president and vice-chancellor Kevin Hall. “As a research university, we take pride in working in partnership to create a better world – by taking action on climate change and working with partners to make life better on land and below the water.”
Over the last 16 years ONC has expanded beyond its initial work in the Salish Sea to create an extensive network of underwater observing infrastructure. According to ONC president and CEO Kate Moran, real-time and long-time series ocean data enable a range of services that facilitate scientific discovery. The data supports climate impact monitoring, maritime safety, innovation in climate change mitigation and even contributes to B.C.’s earthquake and tsunami early warning systems.
“Canadians can be proud of their national observatory that not only yields valuable insights into this undersea world that covers two thirds of our planet, but also contributes to Canada’s climate leadership through innovation in ocean nature-based and technological climate mitigation solutions and coastal resilience,” Moran said.
“This investment also means that ONC, through its work with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, can continue working with partners in Canada and internationally to advance projects in pursuit of healthier oceans, science that promotes ocean resilience and a citizenry engaged with the oceans’ role in supporting life on this planet.”

Pacific FC lose to Valour 1-0 as playoff race heats up
Bailey Moreton, News Staff
Langford-based Pacific FC lost 1-0 on the road against Valour FC in Winnipeg Sunday (Aug. 28.) in capping off a tough extended road trip for the Tridents.
The loss is a gut punch after the Islanders had suffered heartbreak in Costa Rica on Tuesday (Aug. 23) against C.S. Herediano in CONCACAF League action.
With the win, Valour has tightened the gap between them and Pacific to just five points. PFC currently sits in fourth place on 35 points but has seven games left — one more than league leader Atletico with 39 points. PFC needs to finish in at least fourth to ensure a playoff berth.
PFC struggled to get anything going in Winnipeg, with zero shots on target during the game. PFC came under pressure from Valour, particularly from set-pieces. The only goal of the game came from a corner that PFC failed to clear, the ball bouncing off Amer Didic and landing at the feet of Rocco Romeo, who slammed it home.
Romeo nearly had a second from a corner a few minutes later after PFC goalkeeper Callum Irving had parried his header back into the Valour defender’s path. But Irving saved well from the rebound.
Head coach James Merriman said the team looked tired after a tough week of cross-continental travel, which he said caught up with them slightly.
“We looked tired and fatigued, we tried to change it at half-time but it didn’t,” Merriman said after the game.
New striker Jordan Brown did make his debut but got subbed off midway through the second half. Merriman said it was hard for Brown to get involved with the disjointed performance PFC put on display.
Irving said the team couldn’t use travel as an excuse, with long journeys common in the Canadian Premier League, adding the team was proud to have competed in CONCACAF League even with the extra strain that it had put on players. But the loss was tough to take.
“We’re pissed to lose, but in the dressing room I didn’t see any of the boys dropping their heads,” he said during the post-match press conference.
Irving added the team had to adapt multiple times with red cards in back-to-back games against Halifax and C.S. Herediano, but the group had shown a lot of character, particularly in the Herediano game.
PFC return to Starlight Stadium on Sept. 3 against York United for the first of a three-game home stretch.
Pacific FC signs striker Jordan Brown
(Article continuation / separate item)
The former Arsenal, West Ham and Cavalry FC man joins from Electric City FC in League1 Ontario
Pacific FC has reinforced their front line with the signing of English striker Jordan Brown.
Brown started off his career in Arsenal’s academy and also spent time at West Ham, making a single appearance for the senior team. Since then he’s bounced in between Europe and Canada, formerly playing in the Canadian Premier League with Cavalry FC. He most recently played for Electric City FC in League1 Ontario.
“I’m over the moon to join this great group that I’ve heard so many good things about and now I get to be a part of it,” Brown said in a statement. “It’s been a long time coming being able to put on the purple jersey and I will give everything I can to help execute the game plan the gaffer, staff and ownership group has put together to make these boys so successful on the field.”
Brown also played two seasons with Germany’s Hannover 96 II before moving to the Czech Republic. In 2019 he joined Cavalry and played and scored in the team’s first-ever game.
“We are excited to bring Jordan to Pacific,” Stuart Neely, PFC’s director of football, said in the statement. “Jordan is a class character, leads by example both on and off the field and is a great ambassador of the game. We feel Jordan’s experience overseas and in the CPL will bring a positive energy and work ethic to the roster.”
PFC’s striker options need buffing up after top scorer Alejandro Diaz moved to Norway earlier in August.
