Unvaccinated SD62 students must isolate after international travel
No access to virtual or hybrid learning for isolating students
By Bailey Moreton, News Staff
Kids who return from vacations abroad and are unvaccinated won’t be able to return to school for 14 days and will have to work from home. Students in the Sooke District 62 who have to isolate also won’t have the option of virtual or hybrid learning during their isolation. The district sent an email to parents this week warning them that before they book travel plans they should check with their kids’ teachers.
“Coordinate with your teacher and school before you leave to ensure your child stays on top of schoolwork while they are away and for the 14 days following their return,” the email read.
In that 14-day quarantine period, children also can’t have contact with vulnerable people of any vaccination status, go to childcare, travel on crowded public transit or attend large gatherings, according to Health Canada guidelines.
A spokesperson for SD62 said a couple of parents have made inquiries since the email went out, noting that it was sent as a reminder for parents before they book travel.
Children ages 5 and up will likely be able to get their first dose of vaccine next month, according to provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, with Pfizer planning to ask Health Canada to approve its vaccine for younger children as soon as mid-October. Henry said about 340,000 children could become eligible to be vaccinated this fall.

Suspect sought in Langford hit-and-run
West Shore RCMP looking for witnesses, video footage
Police are asking for the public’s help in a hit-and-run investigation.
West Shore RCMP responded to a report of a hit-and-run collision on Happy Valley Road near Luxton Road that occurred at approximately 8 p.m. on Oct. 15.
The victim was driving a grey Honda Civic southbound on Happy Valley Road and reported a white four-door sedan travelling eastbound on Luxton Road performed a right turn onto Happy Valley Road after failing to stop at a stop sign, cutting off the victim.
The suspect vehicle then stopped in the middle of the road in front of the victim’s car, according to a release from West Shore RCMP. The victim drove around the suspect’s vehicle in an attempt to avoid confrontation but the suspect chased after the victim’s car, drove beside it and struck the victim’s vehicle, causing moderate damage and the vehicle to spin out of control.
The suspect was last seen driving eastbound on Latoria Road and is described as a Caucasian man in his late 20s. He is approximately 5’8” with a medium build and short, thin blond hair. He was wearing a navy blue hoodie and green vest.
Investigators are looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who have video footage from the area that could assist in identifying the suspect and his vehicle. The West Shore RCMP can be reached at 250-474-2264.

Fall Weather Reminders (City of Langford)
With the change in season and the wet weather quickly approaching, the City of Langford Engineering Department has been preparing for the rains and inclement weather.
Property Maintenance
The property owner is responsible for cleaning the roof gutters and disposing of yard waste, like branches and leaves, and clearing the driveway culvert fronting the property.
Maintain Your Drain and Culverts
Flooding issues can be easily avoided by cleaning up leaves before they clog drains. The City is asking residents to help prevent flooding in their neighbourhoods by removing leaves and debris from the on-street catch basins and culverts near their homes. If standing water continues to be an issue after removing leaves from the drains, contact the Engineering Department.
Sand and Sandbags
The City of Langford provides sand and sandbags for Langford residents during the Fall and Winter months in preparation for inclement weather. They are available 24 hours a day and sand will be topped up on a regular basis. We encourage residents to take only enough to meet their needs so they are available for others. If there is no sand or sandbags available please contact Fire Dispatch at 250-478-7770. Don’t forget to bring your own shovels! Sand will be available at:
- Centennial Park (2805 Carlow Road)
- Across from Firehall #2 (3213 Happy Valley Road)
- Firehall #3 (2872 Sooke Lake Road)
- Millstream Elementary School (626 Hoylake Ave)
Recycling
With the changing weather and increase in windy days, please secure your recycling to avoid having debris scattered around the neighbourhood. The property owner is responsible for cleaning up these materials. As well as being unsightly, loose recycling can clog the drains, increasing flooding issues.
