Subject:
Langford Triathlon Long Term Agreement
Background
The Westshore Triathlon is looking to set the framework for a long term partnership with the City of Langford, to host Triathlon Events, by way of a memorandum of understanding.
Commentary
Westshore Triathlon is a local club, sanctioned by Triathlon BC, who are committed to delivering safe, fun and rewarding experiences to all racers.
In the past two years the event has been a great success. The participation in the second Langford triathlon increased by 15% from the inaugural event. Similar to the previous two years, future Langford Triathlon’s will have participants swimming in Langford Lake, biking through the communities of Langford, Metchosin and Colwood, and finishing with a run on the trails surrounding Langford Lake.
Following both the 2015 and 2016 Triathlon, City staff received some concerns from neighbouring residents. The majority of complaints from both the 2015 and 2016 events were associated with the use of Langford Lake and noise created during the early morning. Staff also received comments from residents regarding a lack of signage to notify drivers of the Langford Parkway Closure. No complaints were received for any other portion of the event. Staff met with the event organizers after both events to discuss resident’s concerns. Langford Triathlon organizers are willing to work with staff and make changes to minimize impacts to residents. It was agreed that additional signage would be put up prior to future events to notify drivers of the road closure and efforts will be made to reduce early morning noise where possible, however, due to the nature of this event it is not possible to eliminate noise completely.
The proposed event dates for the next three years are Sunday, July 9, 2017; July 8, 2018; and July 7, 2019. The events would be scheduled to begin at 6:00am and finish by 1:00pm. A map of the proposed route is attached.
