Subject:

Irwin Road Trail Infill

Background

As part of frontage improvements for the development being constructed at 2955 Irwin Road, a three meter asphalt trail is being installed, which will allow for further trail connection to the west. This leaves an approximately 60 m section on Irwin between Meridian and this development without a trail.

Commentary

The development has utilities being installed from Meridian to the development. As part of this work there will be some curb and pavement removal and reinstatement at the intersection. With the current works there may be an opportunity to engage the same contractor to realign the current road to allow for the continuation of the three meter asphalt trail. This would allow the trail to be completed from Meridian to the east end of 2955 Irwin.

Legal Implication

None.

Financial Implications

The works proposed in this report are as follows:
Estimated costs are $60,000.00 for design and construction of the 3.0m asphalt trail connection, road realignment and new crosswalk to be paid from Road DCC’s

Once design is completed a quote will be obtained from the contractor performing the other works, if the quote falls within the $60,000.000 with the design a PO will be issued to have the work completed at the same time

Options

That the Transportation and Public Works Committee recommend that Council:

  1. Proceed with the design and installation of the realignment of Irwin Road to allow for the installation of a 3.0m asphalt trail from Meridian to 2955 Irwin. This would include installing a new crosswalk and pedestrian landing on Irwin Road at Meridian, at a total estimated cost of $60,000 to be funded from Road DCC’s.

OR
2. Do nothing at this time.
