Background

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is requesting Council’s permission to host the Annual Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes (letter attached-Attachment A). This event has been held in Langford since 2012 and has been a great success. The 2017 event brought together hundreds of members of the JDRF Community and raised over $115,000 to help cure and treat diabetes. The TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes event provides an opportunity for individuals touched by type 1 diabetes the opportunity to unite and to raise critical funds for research focused on curing, treating and better preventing type 1 diabetes.

Re: Letter of Request for the JDRF's 2018, 2019 and 2020 Walk to Cure Diabetes

Dear Mayor and Councilors,

Thank you so much for the City of Langford's partnership and support of the 2017 TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes, held at Westhills Stadium, City Centre Park, on Sunday, June 11th, 2017. It was a fun, family-oriented event that brought together hundreds of members of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) community at the CCP and beautiful surrounding area of Westhills. We are pleased to tell you that over $115,000 was raised at this event to fund research to help cure and treat Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).

As you may know, our event is closely linked to the CCP and area, having been generously hosted free of charge at CCP since 2012. We feel we can continue to grow the profile and success of the event with the added stability of a multi-year agreement. Respectfully, we request to hold future iterations of the Walk to Cure Diabetes on Sunday, June 10, 2018, Sunday, June 9, 2019 and Sunday, June 14, 2020 in the same manner that the City of Langford has generously supported the Walk since 2012, which is to say at no cost to JDRF.

In return for the City of Langford's support, we'd like to continue offering the benefits associated with our highest level of sponsorship, which are as follows:

We feel fortunate to have been able to host our event at the CCP, Ed Nixon Trail and surrounding areas of Westhills since 2012, and we would be very grateful to be able to continue to do so for the next three years.

I look forward to hearing from you. I'm more than happy to discuss any further details or answer any questions you may have.
