The Capital Regional District is treating the local water system after higher than normal levels of coliform bacteria in the Sooke Lake Reservoir.

District increases disinfectant dosage

Greater Victoria residents may find their drinking water tastes slightly different — but it's no cause for panic.

The Capital Regional District (CRD) has increased the disinfectant dosage (both ultraviolet and chloramination) in the water as a precaution to reduce concentrations of coliform, which may result in a slight chlorine taste and odour in the water.

It remains safe to drink.

According to the CRD, there are higher than normal levels of total coliform bacteria in the Sooke Lake Reservoir, the primary drinking water resource for the Regional Water Supply System serving Greater Victoria.

Total coliform bacteria are naturally occurring in raw, untreated water and concentrations fluctuate.

Staff are monitoring the quality and safety of the water closely.

Basketball fans in Greater Victoria will be in for a thrill as the Toronto Raptors are bringing their annual training camp to the University of Victoria from Sept. 26 to 29.

The NBA franchise announced last week that head coach Dwane Casey and the team will hold training camp at UVic's new $70 million Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities (CARSA).

It's the fourth consecutive year the Raptors will hold training camp in B.C. and the fifth time in team history.

The Raptors will hold an open intra-squad game Thursday, Sept. 28. All other practice sessions will be closed to the public.

Tickets to the intra-squad game will be by donation. How they'll be distributed will be managed between the Raptors and Vikes.

A detailed training camp schedule, along with information for the open practice will be released at a later date. That includes semi-private coaching clinics for community basketball groups.

The Raptors' four-day camp at UVic precedes two NBA preseason games in Hawaii against the L.A. Clippers on Oct. 1 and 2.

"It's an honour to visit a different part of Canada and prepare for our season in the first-class facilities at the University of Victoria," said Casey in a release. "We are extremely proud being Canada's only NBA franchise. Our players and staff feel enthusiasm for basketball in every city we have visited. We don't ever want to take that for granted."

Clint Hamilton, director of athletics and recreation at the University of Victoria, said CARSA was designed to invite this type of opportunity.

"This will be great for our community as we welcome Canada's NBA team to UVic and our CARSA facility. We look forward to providing a high-quality environment for the Raptors players and staff as they begin their journey towards a championship in the 2017/18 season."

This will be the ninth time the Raptors have held a portion of camp outside the province of Ontario. In addition to Victoria, the team has trained in Vancouver (2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016), Halifax (2011 and 2012), Treviso and Rome, Italy and Madrid, Spain as part of NBA Europe Live in 2007, and Buffalo, N.Y. (2000 and 2001).

Belmont volleyball stars continue to dominate

Nick Stiebel

Instead of taking the summer off, Belmont volleyball players have been hard at work increasing their net presence indoors and outdoors.

The defending AAAA B.C. high school champions have kept their skills sharp with strong showings on the indoor court and at the beach as well.

Savannah Purdy earned a spot on the B.C. U-18 indoor squad and helped the team earn a sixth-place finish at the U.S. High Performance Championships in Florida. The team's strong performance against regional teams included a victory over Team Canada.

Team B.C., which also includes Oak Bay player Erin Hutch, is representing the province at the Canada Summer Games, which continue in Winnipeg this week.

Belmont players Taylee Pompiono, Jocelyn Sherman and Gracie May were selected to the U-16 B.C. team and competed against the top teams in Canada at the National Team Challenge Cup, which took place July 15 to 19 in Richmond, B.C.

Pompiono and Sherman led Team Blue to a silver medal, losing the final to Ontario 1. Gracie, playing on Team Red, defeated Ontario 2 to earn a bronze medal.

Meanwhile, back on the beach, Belmont's Hannah May and Olivia Godek made it to the final at the Vancouver Open qualifier. The pair, both 16, came up just short of a shot at competing against pro players. Hannah's older sister, Gracie, teamed up with partner Arden Copping from Vancouver to win the U-16 Beachfest Tournament in July in Vancouver. All of the girls, with the exception of Purdy, competed in the Beach B.C. Championships Aug. 5 to 7 in Vancouver (after the Gazette's print deadline).

A successful showing means they'll qualify for a spot on Team B.C. Beach, which will represent the province at the Seaside Tournament in Oregon on Aug. 10 to 13.
