Both sides working on an agreed statement of facts

The court date for the accused in the April 2016 death of West Shore RCMP Const. Sarah Beckett has been delayed until May 18 at the request of Crown counsel.
Langford resident Kenneth Jacob Fenton is facing five charges resulting from the crash, including impaired driving causing death, following an early morning crash at the intersection of Peatt Road and Goldstream Avenue. He was due to appear in Western Communities court last Thursday.
Fenton has yet to enter a plea and has had his case delayed numerous times since being charged last September.
He wasn't present on April 6, the last time the case was heard, but both his lawyer Dale Marshall and Crown counsel indicated that positive talks had taken place and the two sides were working on an agreed statement of facts.
"The matter has been adjourned.. .to allow Crown and defense to conclude resolution dis- cussions," said Dan McLaughlin, communications counsel at the B.C. Prosecution Service. McLaughlin indicated that avoiding a trial is "certainly one of the options" given these discussions and that the Crown is optimistic the May 18 date will give both sides enough time to reach a resolution.

The Victoria Hospitals Foundation is looking for funding to provide the best equipment for treating patients dealing with a number of neurological conditions.
The fundraising goal of $405,000 would add 23 pieces of new equipment to the neurology and rehabilitation divisions at Victoria General and Royal Jubilee hospitals to assist people with conditions including stroke, epilepsy, MS, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, said foundation chair Steve McKerrell.
"Every year, the neurology and rehabilitation divisions at both hospitals diagnose and treat thousands of patients affected by life-changing conditions that require sophisticated care," McKerrell Said in a media release. "We are asking our community to help ensure our medical teams have the best possible tools to ensure patients can: reach their highest level of function."
VGH is the neurological referral centre for all of Vancouver Island. Treating such a wide variety of conditions requires state of the art equipment, noted Dr. Kristen Attwell-Pope, head of neurology for Island Health.
Former patient Paul Thompson can attest to that following his treatment for a stroke. "Knowing our local hospital is well .equipped to provide emergency care to people like me is very reassuring," he said. "With timely treatment using the best tools, a complete recovery is possible. I am incredibly grateful for the care I received during and after my stroke."
New equipment on the wish list includes two new swallow- and voice imaging systems, used by speech pathologists to assess patients suffering from functional voice disorders, at a cost of $77,300 per unit. There's also an electrocardiogram software upgrade that quickly diagnoses the source and severity of a stroke, listed at $75,000, and a radio frequency Ablations Machine used by specialists to reduce back and neck pain, for $50,000.

1. Colwood Land Use Bylaw No. 151, 1989, Amendment No. 160 (Secondary Suites and Accessory Dwelling Units), Bylaw No. 1678, 2017.
The general purpose of proposed Bylaw No. 1678 is to amend the Colwood Land Use Bylaw No. 151, 1989 by deleting section 2.4.02(7) and all of section 2.4.06. These changes would delete the requirements in the City of Colwood's Land Use Bylaw pertaining to smoke alarm systems in secondary suites and accessory dwelling units (s. 2.4.02(7). Fletcher was out of line on Horgan
'Re: 'Hulk Horgan' hides health bridge too far. (B.C. Views, April 26)
When he is suggesting that "particularly women voters" should decide if John Horgan is premier material is an insidious way of inferring that he is disrespectful to women because he attempted to correct Christy Clark's assertions in a radio debate. As a female this is an insult not only to my intelligence but also to Clark's.
He said his column is not about Horgan's personality, while obviously what followed was meant to be viewed in that negative light.

Plastic bags aren't the proble
Re: Take plastic bags out of the picture (Gazette, April 19)
Oh, here we go again.
Just as stupid, irresponsible people are the root cause of traffic mayhem on the Malahat, the same kinds of humans are behind all that harm being done by plastic bags.
Never mind that testing years ago showed multi-use plastic bags — the ones now favoured by many shoppers as a replacement for single-use bags — are almost certainly more contaminated with microbial nasties than the single-use bags, go ahead and ban single-use bags.
Just like the Malahat "solution" of making it wider and then discovering that speeding dolts are now driving even faster. Never mind that a single decomposable bag in a mixture of soft plastic bags heading for recycling will ruin the entire batch, go ahead and advocate for decomposable bags.
If we're going to ban bags, let's also ban cars. The problem is humans who don't give a damn. How about we tackle that problem and see how many other problems diminish or vanish.
