Who's to blame for the mess in B.C.'s schools?
Clean and healthy schools are vital to a child's education. But 16 years of underfunding by the provincial government have made it impossible for custodians to do their jobs properly.

Chronic underfunding has forced some districts to cut daytime custodian positions, leaving no janitors to clean up accidents, vomit or other messes. Increased and unrealistic workloads cause injuries. Staff have been cut in most districts. Custodians are not willing to compromise the health of the students they support by lowering their standards.

We need a government that's committed to proper funding of public education.

Head CRD bylaw officer given kudos on dog issue
Re: CRD not considering ban on specific breeds following attack (goldstreamgazette.com)

I want to commend the Capital Regional District's chief bylaw officer, Don Brown, for his reasonable response after the horrific dog attack that happened at Esquimalt Lagoon. He recognized that any dog, regardless of breed, is capable of attacking and injuring another dog. As he had also recognized, it is the responsibility of all owners to properly train and know the limitations of their dogs.

RRU students to research Sooke tourism (excerpt)

An agreement between Royal Roads University's School of Tourism and Hospitality Management and the Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce will create educational experiences for students and tourism opportunities for the region, says a school official.

For a third year, students in RRU's master degree in tourism management program will conduct research in the region that looks at tourism, economic development and transportation. Once the research is complete, students will present their findings to the Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce, district council and tourism officials.

"I'm delighted our students will have opportunities to apply their learning while businesses in the Sooke region will benefit from the research," said Royal Roads vice-president academic and provost, Stephen Grundy. "We value our community partnerships as we work together toward common goals."

In a memorandum of understanding, Royal Roads and the Sooke chamber committed to work together to enhance the business opportunities through tourism research.

Most of the students taking part in the program this year have international backgrounds, Grundy said. The students will combine visits to the community with classroom work and then make recommendations.

"The community benefits with some fabulous ideas," he said, noting students gain experience by working in the "real world, with real situations."

Besides Sooke, RRU's tourism program has conducted similar programs in Tofino, Victoria and Cumberland.

The Sooke project is expected to be concluded by mid-fall.
