Correspondence – Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition (Request for 2 cent increase in gas tax for BC Transit)
To the Mayors and Councils of the capital region,
We, the undersigned groups, want to voice our strong support for the proposed 2 cent increase in gas tax funding for BC Transit. A strong and vibrant region like ours requires an equally strong transit service, something that isn't possible without the proposed service increase that this gas tax increase will allow.
Although our members are primarily concerned with better walking, biking and place-making, none of these are possible without the partnership of the transit system. Robust transit services are critical for the health, connectivity, and sustainability of the capital region.
Transit offers all citizens a chance to reduce our use of cars, provides a critical "range-extension" service to those who cannot walk or bike long distances and help achieve a more balanced and equitable transportation system.
We are asking you to send a clear and strong message of support to the provincial government by supporting this gas tax increase.
Yours,
