Goldstream Gazette — News Excerpts

West Shore fire departments opening doors to public

View Royal and Colwood are hosting open houses June 10 and 11

Both events promise plenty of fun and education for the whole family. On June 10, View Royal Fire Rescue will hold its annual open house at the public safety building (333 Island Hwy.), then on June 11 Colwood Fire Rescue will hold its event at the Colwood Fire Station (3215 Metchosin Rd.). Both events promise plenty of fun and education for the whole family, but View Royal’s will be a little extra special as it is the first open house held since the pandemic and the department is marking its 75th anniversary.

“It’s all about coming to meet your community fire department,” said Capt. Geoff Pitre of View Royal Fire Rescue. “The chief gave permission for us to do a giant slab cake to celebrate the anniversary, so that will be there for as long as it lasts.”

Pitre said the department’s members are especially looking forward to the open house as it gives them a much-missed opportunity to connect with their fellow residents and showcase their skills.

BC Ambulance, West Shore RCMP, Wounded Warrior, Colwood View Royal ESS and volunteer emergency radio operators will be there alongside the fire department, each with their own information display. There will also be plenty of hands-on activities and fun demonstrations, ranging from car fire and extraction demonstrations, fire extinguisher training and an opportunity for kids to test their accuracy with a fire hose.

Snacks and refreshments will also be available.

The following day in Colwood will see a similar range of displays and activities, according to Colwood firefighter Adam Whittaker.

“With our community growing as fast as it is, this is a great opportunity for some of our newer residents to come out and get to know us and what we do,” said Whittaker. “We are also going to have our firefighter fit challenge again this year, which gives people an idea of what we do and how physically taxing it is. It’s also a bit of an internal fun thing for us.”

Whittaker said the event is something each member of the department looks forward to each year. While the department did manage to organize a similar event in fall 2022 to much success, he said having it back at its regular spring time means a lot.

Colwood’s event will also feature a barbecue fundraiser with help from Seafirst Insurance Brokers, with proceeds going toward the Colwood Volunteer Firefighter Historical Fund, which helps maintain the on-site department museum.

Both events are scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and neither will have on-site parking available. Visitors should expect to park in the surrounding areas and be prepared to walk to the station.

Resort Trail Program / Bear Mountain access fee (excerpt)

“We wanted to make sure all tools were on the table, it allows all stakeholders to kind of know what we could discuss as a council. So there’s no surprises and council can adequately prepare, we can hear from residents about their thoughts. It just allows for a more fulsome discussion and responsible decision-making on our part,” said Guiry.

In a previous email to Black Press, Ecoasis spokesperson Ruthanne Doyle said the “Resort Trail Program” had been previously announced in 2021, but delayed due to COVID-19. The $45 fee includes access to the Bear Mountain Activity Centre, which has multiple gyms, a pool and other recreation facilities.

“The program was formulated in response to a significant increase in traffic on our private property and is part of our risk management program to meet increasingly stringent insurance requirements,” Doyle wrote in an email.

Doyle added the company consulted Langford, Highlands, West Shore RCMP and the community association about the rule change.

“We’re looking to a more current discussion with current council,” said Guiry.

The motion will be debated by Langford council at its next meeting on June 19.

The entrance to Country Club Way is now closed, with people looking to access the trails behind either having to sign a waiver if they live in Bear Mountain or pay a $45 access fee. (Black Press Media file)

Additional News Excerpt: View Royal votes to support lawsuit against global oil companies

The Town of View Royal has lent its support to a pending class-action lawsuit against global fossil fuel companies for a share of municipal climate change costs.

Following a presentation by the View Royal Climate Coalition and West Coast Environmental Law Tuesday (June 7), council voted to join the suit, and set aside $1 per resident to help cover legal fees once other local governments join. The town is the second municipality in B.C. to join the Sue Big Oil campaign.

“After a significant discussion on the topic of the climate effects related to the cost of climate adaptation at the local level, council voted in favour of joining Gibsons in committing to recover the costs of climate change from global fossil fuel companies,” said Mayor Sid Tobias in an email Wednesday. “Council voted in favour of support and at this time incurs no cost to the town or residents. As View Royal is a coastal community, it remains particularly vulnerable to the increasing effects of climate change including sea level rise.”

According to a news release published Wednesday by West Coast Environmental Law, the campaign was launched in June 2022 and has been endorsed by more than 24 organizations.

“As residents of View Royal, we appreciate that our council is not simply assuming that we can afford the costs of climate change – and that they are instead looking to recover a fair share from the global fossil fuel companies that have played such a huge role in causing the climate crisis,” said Ian Brown of VRCC in the release. “We are proud of our council for the climate leadership that they have shown.”

The campaign’s members said they hope View Royal’s support will spur others in the Greater Victoria region to show their support for the lawsuit.
