## News Article — RCMP, police dogs chase down B&E suspects

On Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 9:20 a.m., a Langford woman called the police after returning home from dropping off her child and finding two men leaving her home with stolen items, according to an RCMP news release.

Seeing her, the men jumped into a Dodge Ram 2500 truck and took off. Luckily, the homeowner was able to record the truck’s licence plate and reported it to police.

Police determined the vehicle had been reported stolen from another Langford residence earlier that morning.

An officer spotted the vehicle on 6 Mile Road in View Royal and attempted to pull the driver over. However, the driver took off at a high speed and police were only able to catch them after the driver crashed the stolen truck into a rock wall near the entrance to Thetis Lake Park. The suspects then fled on foot.

Officers and members of the West Shore RCMP Police Dog Section chased down and caught both suspects. One suspect sustained a dog bite and is being treated for minor injuries.

The men were arrested for numerous offences, including break and enter, theft from residence, vehicle theft, dangerous driving and flight from police. One suspect was also found to be carrying an extendable baton and concealed knife. The investigation is still underway.

## NOTICE OF ROAD CLOSURE AND DISPOSITION AND NOTICE OF ROAD CLOSURE BYLAW RESCISSION

The City of Langford hereby gives public notice of its intention to close and dispose of a portion of road, shown in heavy outline in Schedule ‘A’, known as Spencer Road, which was dedicated as highway by Plan VIP55727.

The approximate 285.0 m2 (3,067 ft2) portion of Spencer Road intended to be removed as highway dedication and disposed of, will be considered by the Council of the City of Langford at its regular meeting at the City Hall, 3rd Floor, 877 Goldstream Avenue, on Monday, November 2, 2020 at 5:30pm. Persons who consider they are affected by the Bylaw will be provided an opportunity to make representations to Council at the meeting, or by delivering a written submission to the Corporate Officer by 4:00 pm on that date.

The City of Langford also intends to transfer the closed portion of road to Tri-Way Seniors Housing Ltd., the developer of the adjoining property shown as 2780 Spencer Road for $35,000.

[Image 3: Schedule ‘A’ map showing the portion of Spencer Road proposed for closure and disposition]

Bylaw No. 1704, adopted June 8, 2017, closing another portion of Spencer Road, incorrectly described the area of road to be closed. This Bylaw was replaced by Bylaw No. 1807, adopted September 25, 2018. A Bylaw may only be rescinded by Bylaw, therefore Council will be adopting City of Langford Bylaw No. 1935, 2020, to Repeal Road Closure Bylaw No. 1704 (Spencer Road), 2017.

## Feature Article — Chainsaw carver turns dead tree into stunning work of art

Where many people see a stump or the ragged remnants of a dead tree best suited for the fireplace, Mike Brown sees a canvas.

That’s why Sheila Stoner contacted the Nanaimo chainsaw carving artist asking him to create a unique piece of art from a historic but desiccated monkey puzzle tree on Malahat Farm, east of Shirley.

Now all done, the result – a three-metre-tall, three-dimensional scene, depicting the original owner of the farm, a bear and raven – is turning heads.

The monkey puzzle tree was planted 100 years ago by pioneer William H. Anderson, a journeyman carpenter from Yorkshire, England when he bought the property and built a home. The tree lays witness to many family activities and generations.

Stoner bought the property two years ago, but soon realized she would need to cut the rotting tree down.

“I felt horrible cutting it down, but it was either the tree or the house,” she said.

But she wanted to keep the legacy of the tree alive. Enter Brown, who created the modern-day totem pole. In this case, the pole, or stump, features Anderson’s carved face on the bottom, a bear in the middle, and a raven on top.

Stoner decided before the 30-metre tree was cut that she wanted a carving made out of the stump and planned to mill the remaining wood and use it for kitchen renovations.

“I’ve kinda tried to bring that tree back into the house and reuse it because it was a big part of the history here.”
