Pink Shirt Day / Anti-Bullying Notices (Local Newspaper Content)

Victoria’s early blossoms may struggle with the arctic air that blew through B.C. last week, but an expert says they should pull through.

Brian Starzomski, University of Victoria environmental studies professor, said the mild weather that preceded the cold snap could be the real kicker for some of Victoria’s more delicate flora and fauna.

“Any gardener would know that heavy frost or a cold spell like this can be really problematic for blooms and early starting plants,” he said. “It can certainly kill them and slow down the blooms on certain susceptible species.”

But it’s the warmer, Spring-like weather that came before the first snowfall on Sunday will make things even harder for local plants.

“There’s lots of research out there to show that sometimes plants do run the risk of getting into a little bit of trouble if there’s a warm spell that causes them to bloom,” Starzomski said. “They become susceptible to getting injured if there’s then a cold spell like the one we’re in.”

“It’s variability in temperatures that can be the real problem.”

Gardeners can protect some of their plants by covering them with burlap sacks or ground cloth. Potted plants can be moved indoors to basements or garages until the cold weather comes to an end.

Still, Starzomski says Victoria plants should pull through.

“I think plants are pretty robust and this is not too terrible and they will survive pretty well,” he said.

February will be tickled pink, but not just for Valentine’s Day.

Feb. 27 is Pink Shirt Day, a national day to campaign against bullying. The idea started in 2007, when two Nova Scotian high school students wanted to support a fellow student, who was being bullied for wearing a pink t-shirt. They bought pink shirts of their own in an action of solidarity.

Since then the campaign has spread and evolved into an entire day where schools, businesses and local law enforcement departments don pink clothing.

This year in Victoria, Pink Shirt Day will be celebrated with an inaugural Pink Shirt Gala, put on by the WITS Programs Foundation (Walk Away, Ignore, Talk it out, Seek help).

The fundraiser is held at the Victoria International Marina on Feb. 23 at 6 p.m., and feature pink-inspired food, cocktails, decor, dress, entertainment and prizes.

Proceeds for the event will support WITS’ bullying prevention programs, which started in Victoria and have since been used in schools across the country. Tickets for the three-course dinner event are $150, and available at pinkshirtgala.com

Also going on for Pink Shirt Day is the Anti-Bullying Film Festival 2019, organized by the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Victoria.

It will feature films submitted by local youth and teens which focus on anti-bullying. The two hour event will happen on Feb. 27 at l’école Victor-Brodeur starting at 6:30. For more information visit bgcvic.org/anti-bullying-film-festival-2019/
