### JDF gold boys U16 heading to provincials
Lindsey Horsting
News Gazette staff

The Juan de Fuca gold boys U16 team is headed to provincials after a long break. Their season ended in February and playoffs took place in early March, but provincials aren't until July later this month.

Brett Soberg, coach of the U16 team, said after playoffs the team took a few weeks off, but has been practicing twice a week and playing exhibition games to keep them sharp before the championships.

"You have to be somewhat strategic about getting it togeth-
er," Soberg said.

The Vancouver teams finished their season in May and the Okanagan and Interior teams finished a week or two before provincials, so the Island team is at a bit of a disadvantage not playing for such a long period of time.

JDF won all but one game this season, and beat the Comox Valley Titans 4-1, to secure the Vancouver Island berth.

Soberg said the team has a lot of depth this season, and he has put his players in different positions throughout the year, so he's got two or three players to slot in and play any one position.

JDF U16 drew a tough pool for the Provincial B Cup 2018, with Port Coquitlam, Burnaby, and Greater Vancouver teams, and Kelowna, Prince George, Nelson and Terrace on the other side of the draw. It will be round robin style to start and then each pool will battle for turf supremacy.

Soberg said his team made provincials three years ago and placed fifth, winning their first and last games, but this year they're hoping for a podium finish.

"It's all about momentum, it really is. They [the JDF team] have the skill to do it," he said.

The team heads to provincials July 5 to 8 on the mainland.

### Victoria Shamrocks coverage (excerpt)
"Rocks look ahead to playoffs" — Goldstream News Gazette

The Victoria Shamrocks practice for the second half of their season. Head coach Bob Heyes (centre) says they're treating each game like a playoff game. (LINDSEY HORSTING /NEWS GAZETTE STAFF)

King said his high lacrosse IQ and playing in a 'place like Orangeville is something Shamrocks fans and players can relate to.

He added Hellyer has already bonded with the team and brings a great attitude into the locker room, which says a lot of his character.

The Shamrocks have set themselves up well for the second half of the season, and in this latter half, Heyes said each game is so important it's like a playoff game, which helps get them prepared for the post-season.

Heyes noted Victoria didn't play well in their three games against Burnaby, Nanaimo and Coquitlam. Although the Shamrocks beat a weaker Nanaimo team, they were pushed to overtime to do it, and then lost to Coquitlam, a team that is 2-9 on the season.

Heyes sees this as an indicator the Shamrocks need to work on the mental part of the game, staying focused, not taking bad penalties and imposing their will on other teams.

"We probably foresaw us winning the last three games and being near first place and having a great stranglehold on first place," he said. "And right now there's nothing that's guaranteed and that's a good thing because we know we haven't played well so we need to re-focus on that."

King, who is ranked first in assists, second in points and fifth in goals in the WLA, said winning the three-game series against each team will be instrumental in the weeks leading up to the post-season. Learning to adapt and winning on the road, and he said more importantly winning at home, is what the Shamrocks need in the second half of the season.

"We are 0-1 against Coquitlam right now," King said. "I think that's something that's burning in the back of guys' heads a little bit, but is also going to fuel our fire a bit ... we always find a way to win in front of our home crowd that's always amped up."
