Flower count kicks off in Colwood

Which municipality will be the "bloomingest" after this year's count?
Lindsey Horsting
News Gazette staff

The sun came out just in time for the launch of the 43rd annual Flower Count that took place in the Italian Gardens at Royal Roads University last week.

The Flower Count is a fun way to celebrate Greater Victoria's mild climate and a friendly battle for flower supremacy amongst the municipalities. Colwood has been awarded the "bloomingest" municipality for the last four years.

Vice chair of Tourism Victoria, Kimberley Hughes, gave an opening speech at the kick off noting that as a result of a more temperate climate during shoulder seasons, Victoria continues to see an increase in tourism.

"It matters to us because it really showcases what an incredible destination we have," she said. "While the rest of the country is digging out snowbanks, we are counting blossoms."

In 1976, the inaugural year of the count, 130 million flowers were counted.

Flower counts can be submitted on flower-count.com and followed on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (@FlowerCount). The number of blossoms counted will be attributed to the community in which the contributer resides.

The shortcuts used to estimate the number of blossoms are as follows: a small tree full of blossoms equals 250,000 blossoms, a mid-sized heather bush has 1,000 blossoms and trees in full bloom count for 750,000 blossoms.

This event encourages community involvement and elementary school participation. Grade 4 and 5 students can make entries to try to win a trip to The Butchart Gardens awarded by L.A. Limousines. Cordova Bay Elementary School won last year with a class counting 23 million blooms.

Wolves swept by Campbell River Storm

The Westshore Wolves didn't have quite as much luck in their playoff run as the Victoria Grizzlies this weekend.

The Wolves were swept by the Campbell River Storm 6-2 in game 4 of the second round of Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League playoff action.

During Sunday game at The Q Centre, the Storm came out hot, scoring five unanswered goals in the first and second periods on shots from Dawson Frank, Jalen Price, Reid Wheeldon, Darren Hards and Damon Porter. The Wolves got on the board at 16:11 in the second stanza with a goal from Nicholas Polomark assisted by Cole Gardner and Lukas Yesaki.

Heading into the third down 5-1, Keegan Durrance capitalized on the power play with a shot from Brandon Tutte and Trevor Bottomley. But the Storm's Ryan Butler answered right back at 11:53.

Wolves netminder Jordan Spandli stopped 33 of 39 shots, while the Storm's goalie Liam Murphy stopped 21 or 23 shots on net.

The loss comes after the Wolves defeated the Victoria Cougars in a thrilling game 7 double overtime in round one of the playoffs.

Despite the loss, the team is already looking to the future. The Wolves' prospects camp, which is held under the direction of the team's coaching, training and management staff, will take place March 30 to April 1.
