Message:

Neither of us agree to allowing the properties at 3059 & 3061 Jacklin Road a) to increase façade signage area, nor b) to increase the number of freestanding signs along Jacklin Road. Jacklin Road already suffers from too much light pollution, along nearly the whole length from Goldstream Avenue to Jenkins Road. The last section from Jenkins Road to Sooke Road can be saved, in some small part, by maintaining the existing permit restrictions. Light pollution has been shown to be detrimental to human health, affecting sleep patterns and emotional states due to not only the amount of nighttime light but the wavelength of the light (blue light being the most problematic). Also, the excess of nighttime lighting is a waste of energy, an ongoing contributor to climate change. Westshore Mall is the current light polluter in the area where this new development is to be built, so increasing the size and number of signage at a neighbouring site is only going to aggravate the problem. Westshore Mall does not seem to suffer a lack of awareness of location nor stores and services contained within as evidenced by the daily near-full parking lots surrounding it, despite having on one street sign. We highly doubt that once the businesses are established in the new development they would be any more disadvantaged because the signs were smaller or fewer in number.

The west side of Jacklin Road remains residential. This means a number of residents (potentially an increasing number of residents in the future as higher density buildings are built over time) will be faced with the glare of always-on lights from the businesses across the street. If not for those of us living there now, then for those who'll be living there in the future, we say "no" to approving the permit.

Attn: Braden Hutchins
I am writing concerning DVP17-0018. I did phone and leave voicemail but no return call. I am opposed to permitting further bright lights that will come with development across the street. Residential homes are on this street.
