Background

The Goldstream Farmers Market moved from Bryn Muar Avenue to Veterans Memorial Park in 2014. To help facility this move, the City provided, at ‘no cost’ to the Market, the following:

  • Moved, by crane trunk, the Market’s storage container from Metchosin to Veterans Memorial Park (VMP).
  • Allowed the container to be stored onsite, year round, which involved some site preparation costs.
  • Worked out an agreement with the Mason’s Lodge to allow parking on their site. This involves supplying the Masons with some security at ‘no charge’ for certain days when they have an event that coincides with the market.
  • Installed a porta-potti and then built a washroom in the Chamber Building to help facility the increase in Market users which in turn increased park’s operational costs.
  • Installed additional signage to assist with traffic control and parking.
  • Increased Bylaw Enforcement patrols in the area to deal with parking issues.
  • Paid for all increases in hydro, water and sanitation costs.
  • Changed mowing, park cleaning and sprinkler watering schedules to facilitate the Market’s use of the park.
  • Paid for additional cleaning when requested by Market.

On March 21, 2016 Council reviewed an additional request from the Goldstream Farmers Market to add liquor tasting and sales in VMP. Council asked staff and Councillor Szpak to meet with members of the Market and local community business to work out a solution.
